We believe music is for everyone - whatever your age, stage, ability or capacity there is a way for you to play with and create music if it is on your heart to do so. It is no doubt a different experience learning as an adult, but no less rewarding or important. We have successfully taught students aged 4yrs to 84yrs, so you can trust our advice!

Commitment

It's the only way you'll get there! Learning music is about time and passion: If you commit the time and enjoy what you're doing, you will definitely succeed.

Be Realistic

As an adult, you don't have a disadvantage in what you are able to learn. However, you need to shift your perspective. As you are starting later, those at your age may have a headstart. Don’t compare yourselves to them, just work on you.

Be Patient

Adults tend to be outcome-driven, in our experience. We expect progress to happen much faster than it will. Don't kid yourself, learning music can be difficult and takes time - otherwise, everyone would do it! Give yourself this time and allow your body and mind to connect up and get around what you are doing.

Being a 'Natural'

You will have strengths and challenges like anyone else, you do not need to be a natural at this. Hard work and a good teacher (like the fantastic ones at Stormer Music) will help you navigate the experience.

Buy a Quality Instrument

One advantage of learning music as an adult is your parents don't have to buy your instrument! Don’t start with a kid’s instrument, they can sound awful, have difficulty keeping in tune, and don’t play well. You'll also move onto a bigger instrument and have to relearn some muscle memory. Invest in a decent starter (doesn't always have to be expensive!) and take this seriously.

Young students learn quickly, adults learn effectively. In our experience, adults are able to take in wider concepts, context and bigger ideas, while younger learners need things in smaller pieces. It is never too late to start, and even seasoned professionals continue to learn well into their maturity. Talk to us today about our tailored one-on-one classes - CLICK HERE.
